Your parents were quite right when they told you to eat your vegetables. Eating plenty of well-cooked vegetables is one of the best – and nicest – ways to prevent cancer and other diseases.


Aloe vera is known for being one of the best ways to soothe a sunburn. In gel form, the gooey, sticky substance feels like a cool balm on your hot skin. But that’s not aloe’s only superpower. “Aloe is an unassuming plant,” says registered dietitian Beth Czerwony, RD, LD. “It doesn’t really look like it’s all that special. But it can actually provide a lot of benefits.” Believe it or not, drinking aloe vera juice is one of the best ways to reap health benefits from the plant.

Aloe vera juice benefits – Aloe vera juice first and foremost contains antioxidants, or substances that help reduce your chances of developing conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. But aloe vera juice offers benefits beyond just prevention.


Everyone agrees that it’s a good idea to eat more fruits and vegetables. The reasons mount as you get older. They are not only nutritious – a rich source of vitamin C, beta carotene, folic acid, fibre, potassium and magnesium, with little or no fat or sodium and few calories – but they are also a unique source of powerful phytochemicals that protect you from disease. Here are some of their benefits:

  • Weight Eating more fruit and vegetables is an important way to manage your weight. They are low in calories and high in fibre and water, both of which are filling. Researchers have found that the greater the variety of vegetables that people eat, the slimmer they are.
  • Heart disease Fruits and vegetables are rich in fibre, potassium, antioxidants and folic acid – all of which protect against heart disease. In population studies, people who eat the most fruits and vegetables are between 15 and 40 per cent less likely to develop heart disease, compared with people who eat the least.
  • Blood pressure One effective way to reduce high blood pressure is to eat eight to ten small servings of fruits and vegetables a day, along with at least three low-fat dairy servings. The effect is as pronounced as that achieved by many blood-pressure-lowering drugs. And eating this way often leads to weight loss, which may help to reduce blood pressure.
  • Cancer protection People who eat five or more servings a day of fruits and vegetables are only half as likely to die from cancer as those who eat one serving or none. Certain types of fresh produce may provide even greater protection. In population surveys, the vegetables most associated with a lower risk of cancer include onions, garlic, carrots, tomatoes (especially cooked), and vegetables including broccoli, cabbage, kale, Brussels sprouts, bok choy and cauliflower. One study found that men who ate three or more servings of these vegetables a week had a 41 per cent lower risk of prostate cancer than men who ate less than one serving per week.
  • Longevity Fruit lovers appear to have an added advantage: a recent Swedish study of men aged between 54 and 80 found that those who ate the most servings of fruit lived the longest.

A low-calorie, low-sugar option – Regular juices aren’t always healthy. Not all of them have a high percentage of real fruit in them, for starters. Many also have added sugar — and lots of it. Aloe vera juice, however, is a healthy option. Czerwony says an eight-ounce serving isn’t high in protein, fat or carbs, but has only eight calories and is low in sugar. “It’s pretty neutral,” Czerwony notes. “You can drink it on its own, or you can put it in your smoothies.”

Helps clear up skin –  It may seem counterintuitive, but you often develop acne because you’re dehydrated. As a result, your skin produces more oil, which leads to acne breakouts. “If you’re drinking aloe vera juice, you’re going to get hydrated,” says Czerwony. “That’s going to give your skin extra moisture, and so you’re going to have less chance of having acne.”

Relieves constipation – If you’re constipated, good news. Aloe vera juice’s texture can affect the consistency of your poop, specifically by making it softer.

Reduces heartburn –  Heartburn occurs when acid in your stomach travels up into your esophagus. The results of a small 2015 study showed that aloe vera juice can alleviate some of the acid in your stomach that brings on heartburn.

Maintain eye health – Aloe vera juice is packed full of beta carotene, an antioxidant typically found in orange and yellow vegetables and fruits. Your body converts beta carotene to vitamin A, a vitamin linked to overall eye health.

Boost your intake of certain vitamins and minerals – Aloe vera juice contains vitamin C — a versatile vitamin that helps with immune function, for example — as well as calcium and magnesium. “Many people having muscle aches are often low in calcium and magnesium,” says Czerwony. “Drinking aloe vera juice could replenish these if your diet is low in them.”


Filling your plate

It’s not hard to add more fruits and vegetables to your diet. Just stock up on fresh or frozen produce (there’s a greater variety of frozen produce available now than ever before) on your next trip to the supermarket, then try these suggestions.


Ways to eat more vegetables
  • In winter, liven up your soup with extra frozen vegetables straight from the freezer.
  • In summer, brighten your salad with mangetout and sugar snap peas for crunch and colour. Cook them briefly first, then refresh them under cold running water.
  • Salsa is an easy, nutritious and very tasty topping for steamed or microwaved chicken or fish.



Fresh fruits and vegetables can carry microorganisms that cause illness. Wash produce thoroughly in cold running water especially fruits and vegetables like lettuce and berries that will be eaten raw. Even if you are going to cook them, rinse them first.

Ways to eat more fruits
  • Put fruit in a big, attractive bowl on your dining table or in the living room. Some fruits keep best in the fridge, so put them on a shelf at the eye-level of the chief family ‘snacker’. Research shows that when fruit is most visible, it’s more likely to be eaten.
  • Cereal and yoghurt are better with fruit: add some fresh berries or dried cranberries, or cut up half an apple or a banana
  • Skip that chocolate bar and nibble a mixture of dried fruit (raisins, apricots, cherries, figs, peaches and prunes) instead. Don’t overdo it, though, since dried fruit is high in calories.
  • Start a blender habit: fruit smoothies are quick and delicious, and a good way to use up fruit that is past eating.
  • Bring back the melon appetizer before dinner. It’s a lovely way to start a meal.
  • Opt for fruit-based desserts, such as crumbles or baked apples.



Fruits that are rich in vitamin C include apricots, cantaloupe, grapefruit, honeydew melon, kiwis, mangos, oranges, pineapple, plums, strawberries, clementines and watermelon.
