Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome (EGUS)

Normal stomach

EGUS is a term used to describe erosive and ulcerative diseases of the stomach of the horse. It is more specifically divided into 2 terms that describe the region of the stomach that is affected. Equine Squamous Gastric Disease (ESGD) and Equine Glandular Gastric Disease (EGGD). ¹

Have you noticed your usually hearty eater has become grumpy at dinner time?  Maybe pinning his ears? Eating slower or not at all?

Has your horse started swishing his tail or moving around when you tighten the girth but you have already ruled out poor saddled fit?

Well you might be dealing with an equine ulcer.  Since horses can’t verbally tell us what is wrong, behavior changes are usually the first indicator that something is amiss.  Horses associate a negative result with the most recent thing that has happened so they might be associating eating with pain.  Cranky behavior around dinner time might be a sign that your horse is getting the pain of a stomach ache after eating. ²

If you have ever had to deal with an equine ulcer (and since 65% of horses have had them so chances are you have) then you might find this article helpful.  Even if you are lucky enough to not have had to treat an ulcer yet, it’s always good to understand all aspects of horse health.

Most people think of aloe vera as a cure-all plant for humans, but experienced horse owners know it also benefits equines. Aloe vera is a natural alternative to chemical-laden products that promotes skin and stomach health in horses.

It is important to be certain that the aloe ingredient is juice, and contains no part of the aloe leaf skin.

“Chemicals in aloe can reduce inflammation and have antibacterial properties.”

Supporting healthy skin

Aloe vera has long been used to treat minor skin conditions like sunburn, rashes and slight cuts. Many horse owners find it also promotes healthy skin in equines. According to the University of California at Berkeley, research has shown components of  aloe can reduce inflammation and have antibacterial properties, making aloe vera a suitable treatment for minor skin conditions. According to TheHorse.com, veterinarians will sometimes use aloe vera to treat burns, especially when fungi and bacteria are a concern.

“We rarely use systemic antibiotics because there is not enough blood supply to carry them to burned tissues, and it may promote resistant organisms moving in,” Reid Hanson, a professor of equine surgery and lameness at Auburn University, told the publication.

Researchers also suspect aloe supports healing by increasing blood flow to the area and promoting collagen production. Even without injuries present, a topical aloe vera formula can help your horse’s skin remain healthy. Aloe Vera Australia’s Aloe Liniment (Equine) contains aloe vera and is gentle enough for daily use.

Diagnosing Ulcers:

As I mentioned above the first signs are usually behavioral.  I can walk down a barn aisle at dinner time and pretty much pick out the ulcer horses.  What you might notice include:

Grinding of the teeth
Belching noises

Slow eating

often walking away without finishing meals all at once.

Picky appetite

that includes the horse refusing foods or supplements that were consumed readily before.

Poor performance

Irritability

Sensitivity to touch

around the horse’s lower belly/sternum area.

Non-behavioral signs that your horse might have an ulcer are:

Poor coat

Weight loss

Aloe Vera Juice

Aloe Vera Extract

Aloe is high in digestible fiber, which gives it the properties of lowering bowel transit time, absorbing toxins in the bowel, regulating colonic bacteria, and soothing and protecting the digestive tract.  Aloe also contains a complex mixture of mucopolysaccharides (complex sugars) that nourish cells and support them in replicating. This property is especially important for the healing of pre-existing ulcers. ³

Ulcer Prevention

Aloe vera juice contains a large amount of digestible fiber, according to The Equine Nutrition Nerd. This allows it to soothe and protect the digestive tract while regulating bacteria, giving your horse relief from ulcers. The fiber also absorbs toxins in the horse’s bowels and reduces bowel transit time. Aloe vera also contains mucopolysaccharides , which help heal ulcers by supporting cell replication.

Aloe vera juice has a strong taste, and your horse might not take to it the way you want. According to Holistic Horse, one trainer found success by pouring a half cup of the juice over her horse’s morning and evening feed. Not only did this help her horse eat more, but the aloe vera also supported a healthy attitude With its gastric pain alleviated, the horse grew calmer and more willing to work with its trainer.

Thank you Aloe Vera Australia for your fantastic products. I started using Aloe Vera for my horse about 8 years ago for an ulcer in his gut. The product I bought was the Aloe Vera premium powder. It worked a treat and now my horse is fine. I then thought if it good fix my horse then perhaps I try it for my gastritis. Well it worked for me and I do not need to take Nexium, a prescribed medication anymore. Sure is a more natural way to combat my gastritis. I also use your liniment for the osteoarthritis in my hands. It helps so much to relieve the pain in my hands. Thanks so much for your great products from a happy customer Jan Webb
